- Shankaradeva
- (1449?-1568)He was born to Shaivite parents of the Kayastha caste in Ranpur district of Assam. Educated in Sanskrit, he became famous as a poet, musician, singer, and painter. Having met Chaitanya at Puri, he was attracted to Vaishnava doctrines. He was influenced by the teachings of the Madhavacharya sect of Puri. Shankaradeva's idea of bhakti was opposed to karma-marga (selfless activity), and his beliefs were a sort of revolt against the monism of advaita and agnosticism of samkhya. He used short plays on Puranic themes for disseminating his ideas in the Assamese language.
